A Dena'Ina Legacy K'Tl'Egh'I Sukdu: The Collected Writings of Peter Kalifornsky
Published in Paperback by Alaska Native Language Center (September, 1991)
Authors: James Kari and Alan Boraas
Average review score:

Kasilof and Kenai historical works
One of the best resources for historical documentation of native life and folklore in the Kenai/Kasilof area. Historical photographs are included in the book from 1890-1920. A true classic in a special place on my bookshelf. I highly recommend this book to all students of Dena'ina and local history buffs.

Excellent resource for Dena'ina studies
This is the collected writings of Peter Kalifornsky, a Dena'ina Athabascan elder who, in order to write the book, first had to study and help create the written version of the Dena'ina language, and then went about writing down all the stories of his cultural language of Dena'ina. Peter wrote the stories in Dena'ina first, and then translated the stories into English. The Dena'ina translation appears on the left pages and the English translation on the right pages. It covers the full spectrum of cosmology of the Dena'ina culture. A great resource for anyone interested in understanding about one of the most successful subsistence cultures ever on Earth.

The Kenai Canoe Trails: Alaska's Premier Hiking and Canoeing System
Published in Paperback by Northlite Publishing (December, 1997)
Average review score:

Invaluable Resource
Your guide book "The Kenai Canoe Trails" was an invaluable resource on my son's and my canoe trip through the Swan Lakes route and out the Moose River. The detailed maps of the campsites and portages were absolutely accurate and very needed on this route. Other tips like, "hip boots recommended" proved wise advice! Thanks for hleping my son and I have a great Alaskan vacation.

Very useful guide to Alaska's Kenai canoe trails
I've canoed the Swanson Lake system in the Kenai canoe trails for years, and this is by far the most useful guide to this area. I've never met Mr. Quick, but his book offers very detailed information on such matters as the character of each portage trail, the location of campsites on the various lakes, the presence or absence of fish, and so on. The information provided is highly accurate (even if Quick does overlook a campsite or two). One might quibble with some of his recommendations on gear, portaging methods, etc., but such matters tend to be subjective among experienced outdoors people, and this book isn't primarily intended as such a general how-to guide anyway. "The Kenai Canoe Trails" is highly recommended for anyone planning -- or even dreaming of -- a trip into one of the most wild and pristine wilderness canoe systems in North America.

Backcountry Fishing Alaska's Kenai Peninsula: A Complete Angler's Guide
Published in Paperback by Countryman Pr (October, 2002)
Author: Dave Atcheson
Average review score:

More than an excellent & useable guidebook--its a great read
I read the book while on vacation in Mexico and found myself thirsting for the clean waters of Alaska. The author is obviously a devout fisherman. Woven throughout the book are comments, observations and short essays that address the intangable elements of fishing that can result in a love of the sport. Atcheson has not forgotten what the essence of fishing is all about and he can be downright poetic at times. This is not to imply that important planning details and valuable local knowledge is glossed over. On the contrary, Atcheson hits all the bases and offers many fishing techniques, super maps, and detailed information on many quiet out of the way trout and salmon hang-outs and the large rivers. This book is educational and packed with advice and seasonal information that is applicable and unique to fishing in Alaska. A really good book that delivers years of local knowledge and a better understanding of life below the surface.

Southcentral Alaska: Including Anchorage, Kenai Peninsula, Susitna Valley and Prince William Sound (Umbrella Guides)
Published in Paperback by Epicenter Press (March, 1995)
Author: Scott McMurren
Average review score:

An insiders guide, but a bit old
I bought this book as it appeared to be the only guide that focused solely on general travel in the Southcentral region of Alaska. I didn't need information on Kotzebue or Nome or even Denali, so I thought this specialized guide would be better.

The main strength of this book comes from Mr. McMurren's intimate familiarity with the area. This is shown in his very precise driving directions and little details like the names of the owners of various restaurants and hotels. But his familiarity may have caused him to leave out two things important to travelers: many location-specific items, and general Alaska travel info. These location-specific items would include suitability for children and the disabled, opening and closing dates/times, prices, availability of food, etc. A chapter on general info for any traveler to Alaska could have included best (and worst) dates to travel to the area, climate, general costs, general availability of hotels, a calendar of regional festivals, etc. Sure I could get this from the Internet, but I'd rather have it all in one place that I can carry with me.

And speaking of the Internet, this book was last updated in 1995, so some of the information is out-of-date. There are no web sites or e-mail addresses listed for any of the businesses, agencies, or traveler's bureaus.

Although a handy specialized guide to Southcentral Alaska, I'd recommend supplementing it with another, more up-to-date guide book, even if that one has a lot of info on parts of Alaska you don't plan to visit.
